TERMINAL MISTAKE

A journey through ubuntu by making mistakes using the terminal. πŸ˜‰

All right folks. Do you know what time it is? Any idea?

You?

No?

How about you?

What? 9:27??

Nope…

It is time…

TO ROCK’N’ROLL!!! πŸ˜€

All right, that was lame. So let’s get started. This is not an official tutorial or anything about ubuntu. Just a poor guy here trying to put down what he is learning. πŸ™‚

  1. Listing and changing directories.
  2. Playing the music.
  3. Copying and moving (renaming) files and folders.
  4. Creating and removing files and folders.
  5. Searching and installing softwares.
  6. Having fun with gcc.
  7. Installing a software from source. (Untarring a .tar/.tar.gzΒ file)
  8. Typing Malayalam.

  1. but how do you open a folder in the terminal when it’s name has two parts (eg:new folder)? when ‘cd new folder’ is run, it says ‘directories new and folder are not found’..

    • A very nice feature of ubuntu is the tab completion.
To open the folder named ‘new folder’, just do:

      cd ne (press tab key)

Pressing the tab key after typing “cd ne” will automatically complete the folder name for you. It will appear as:

      cd new\ folder

Now if you press enter, you can access the folder.

Note that if a folder name consists of two parts with a space in between, the ‘\’ character should precede the space when using that folder name for any purpose.

It is highly recommended that you use underscores rather spaces for file and folder names.

Practice using tab completion. It’ll make things really quick. Just try hitting tab whenever you start typing something in the terminal and you’ll get the hang of it.

Hope this clears your doubt. πŸ™‚
